Mock lecture and study abroad Q&A by the University of Essex

On September 26, 2019, the Center for Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy welcomed Dr. Carolina Garriga and Ms. Emmi Russell, a lecturer at the Department of Government and staff from the international office at the University of Essex, to hold a mock lecture and Q&A session for students in Building No. 3 at Waseda Campus.First, Dr. Garriga delivered a mock lecture on the introduction to international political economy. While free trade could increase overall welfare in the world, some people will not profit from it and could potentially exert political pressure towards their government, triggering trade protectionism She explained that trade protectionism are observed today because free trade, not actively participate in the trade liberalization movement due to the so-called collective action problem. Dr. Garriga explained that this mechanism is behind the recent trade protectionism such one seen in the United States of America. The students in the session responded well to Dr. Garriga’s questions and it seemed that the most students were able to understand the mock class.

After that, Ms. Emmi Russell explained about studying abroad at the University of Essex. Essex is a research-type national university established in 1964. It is located in the city of Colchester in the southeastern part of England and gathers a very high and world-wide recognition. For example, the university is ranked 9th in the Research Assessment Exercise conducted by UK government for granting research; more than 90% of submitted research is “internationally recognized”, 22% It was introduced that it is regarded as “world top level”. Moreover, social science, law, and economics have obtained the score of 5* (world top level), and among them, the Faculty of Political Science and the Faculty of Sociology are given the score of 6* because they are continuously earning 5* score. The campus is a cosmopolitan environment where international students from over 130 countries and teachers from all over the world gather, and a campus-type university enables the students to live on the campus without being bothered going to the city-center.

There are international students and faculty from over 130 countries, and the facilities on campus enable the students to live on the campus without being bothered going to the city-center.
