Participatory Culture and Creative Remix: From Traditional Japanese Performance Arts to Contemporary Manga

A reexamination of Japanese culture from the perspective of the audience as performers and the key role of creative remix and media technology

The Global Japanese Studies Model Unit is pleased to announce the Columbia University Open Classroom event at Waseda University. This lecture by Professor Haruo Shirane of Columbia University will reexamine Japanese culture from the perspective of the audience as performers and key role of creative remix and media technology. Professor Shirane is the author and editor of many books, including Japan and the Culture of the Four Seasons (2012), Reading The Tale of Genji: The First Millennium (2015), Cambridge History of Japanese Literature (2015), and Monsters, Animals and Other Worlds: A Collection of Short Medieval Japanese Tales (2018). A participatory workshop will be held after the lecture.
