■Abstract
The Japanese government under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe launched youth exchange programme, namely the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth (JENESYS) in 2007. Under this program, the Japanese government intended to invite around 6000 youths from overseas to Japan, including Indonesia. The program aims to promote “strong solidarity among Asian and East Asia Summit (EAS) countries”, and more importantly, to promote mutual understanding and more friendly feelings towards Japanese youths and citizens. In this workshop, she will talk about her study which examined Japan’s public diplomacy in Indonesia, specifically by looking at the impact of JENESYS. Her study shows that the impact of JENESYS includes creating positive impressions of people in Indonesia towards Japan and strengthening bilateral relationship between Japan and Indonesia.
