In its proposal chosen for major funding by the Education Ministry in 2014, Waseda University set a goal of having eighteen research areas in the global top 100 by 2024.

To that end, six areas with worldwide recognition were chosen as model units for prioritized funding: Global Japanese Studies; Empirical Analyses of Political Economy; Health Promotion, Sports and Exercise; ICT and Robotics; Energy and Nanomaterials; and Multiscale Analysis, Modeling and Simulation.

The results announced today, such as Sports-related Subjects ranked 19th in the world, show the impact of that initiative and Waseda’s commitment to excellence.

Looking at the top 200, generally considered the world’s elite, Waseda has 24 subjects earning this distinction, three more than last year.

In the five broad subject groupings, Arts & Humanities and Social Science & Management are both very high (45 & 59, respectively), and two more, Natural Sciences (102) and Engineering & Technology (105), are also on the verge of the top 100.

These numbers demonstrate the University’s overall strength and remarkable progress towards the goals described above. Waseda will continue its efforts as a leader in the world, in service to the world community.
