On October 18, Center for Empirical Analyses of Political Economy as a Top Global University Project, Waseda University invited Associate Professor David Souder from the University of Connecticut for an international workshop entitled “A behavioral understanding of investment horizon and firm performance.”

Professor Sounder’s areas of expertise include long-term corporate investments, organization design and sustainability, mergers and acquisitions, and family businesses. In the workshop, he reported on an inverted-U relationship between firm investment horizon and its performance using the dataset of American-based manufacturing firms. He defined investment horizon as “the length of time managers expect it will take for investment choices to pay off,” which is measured by depreciation of property and plant/equipment. He will publish a paper based on this topic in Organization Science, one of the top journals in management. Professors Tomoaki Sakano, Shinichi Hirota, and Assistant Professor Susumu Nagayama from the Faculty of Commerce as well as doctoral students studying management attended the workshop.

There were also additional lectures geared specifically towards doctoral students. In one of his lectures, Professor Souder explained the theories used in strategic management such as agency theory and resource based view. He also spoke about the latest American trend in management research and his own experiences in an engaging discussion about the challenges in empirical strategy research. A student who participated in the discussion said, “This was a great opportunity to know about what’s new in the research community based in the United States.” Furthermore, Professor Souder, who is also an editor for top journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, individually consulted students seeking for advice regarding their ongoing research.
