Chair: Associate Professor Junichi Yamanoi (School of Commerce, Waseda University)

1st Session

In the first session, Prof. Tsang reported intriguing research

questions:

“How does a non-U.S. company’s IPO (Initial Public Offerings) in the US attract institutional investors?” and “What role does a CEO’s educational background play in IPO?” According to his analysis of foreign companies’ IPOs in the US, a non-US company with the CEO who has a prestigious U.S. degree receives more institutional investors’ participation in its IPO. In addition, an non-US company with the CEO that has a prestigious foreign degree receives more institutional investors’ participation in its IPO.

2nd Session

In the second session, Prof. Tsang reported a joint research with Dr. Stratos Ramoglou. In contrast to the previous session, Prof. Tsang presented a theoretical study of entrepreneurial opportunities from a novel perspective. The study reconciles the debate between the discovery approach, entrepreneurs find out and exploit profitable opportunities, and the creation approach, entrepreneurs make up profitable opportunities by proposing the actualization approach, where entrepreneurial opportunities are the propensity of market demand to be actualized into profits through the introduction of novel products or services. This paper was accepted by the Academy of Management Review, which is the most prestigious theoretical journal in Management.

In addition to professors and Ph.D candidates of Waseda University, those from other universities also attended these workshops. One of the Ph.D candidates said, “I could well understand the research results through its author’s direct explanations. He also gave us tips and inside story in his research, which I could not get just from reading the papers. I appreciate this precious opportunity.”

In addition, Prof. Tsang’s PhD seminars were held for two days.

1st. Session on Oct 19.

Further, Prof. Tsang gave Ph.D candidates individual consultation on their research. He provided insightful advice from a fresh viewpoint based on his experience as an established researcher and experienced editor of major journals.
