◆Purpose of the Symposium
Waseda University’s Top Global University project “Waseda Goes Global” Frontier of Embodiment Informatics: ICT and Robotics Unit held the symposium “International Symposium on Machine Intelligence for Future Society 2023” as part of the Waseda University Top Global University Project (TGU) Symposium Series to celebrate 10 years of the project and to present our achievements over a decade of activities.

◆Symposium Report
Professor Tetsuya Ogata (Waseda University), the leader of the ICT and Robotics Unit, took the podium at the beginning of the symposium and gave an opening address, followed by a presentation on the 10-year results of the activities under the title of “Activities on Waseda Top Global University (TGU) Project ICT and Robotics Unit.”

He explained the results of overseas joint research and collaboration through inviting overseas faculty members, sending students abroad for study, and holding events such as symposiums, seminars, and workshops, as well as the results of activities to promote the expansion of international networks.

 

Prof. Ogata followed with a presentation on “Deep Predictive Leaning For Real Robot Systems,” citing recent topics such as AI, ChatGPT, and AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), and presented his latest research on deep learning.

 

Prof. Gordon Cheng (Technical University of Munich) from Germany thanked the TGU members for the relationship they have built with him through TGU projects and presented his research on “Human-Centered Machine Intelligence For Future Society.” He then spoke about “Human-Centeredness,” which puts humans back in the center rather than machines.

 

 

The sub-leader of the unit, Professor Hironori Washizaki (Waseda University), gave a presentation on SWEBOK (Software Engineering Body of Knowledge), software engineering, and machine learning under the title of “SWEBOK Evolution and Machine Learning Software Engineering.” He also described the results of human resource development brought about by the TGU project.

 

 

Prof. Sethu Vijayakumar (University of Edinburgh) from the UK gave a lecture on machine learning titled “From Automation to Autonomy: Machine Learning for the Next Generation Robotics”. He also expressed his expectations for continued collaboration with Waseda University in the future.

 

 

 

Prof. Shinjiro Umezu (Waseda University), a member of the unit, gave a lecture on biomedicine in a super-aging society under the title of “Bioengineering Studies For Super-aging Society.” He also described the results of the development of new 3D printer technology through the promotion of joint research with overseas universities as part of the TGU project.

 

 

Prof. Hirotaka Sato (Nanyang Technological University) from Singapore presented his research on “Cyborg Insect: Remote Radio Control And Navigation of Living Insects.” He also explained about his joint research with Prof. Umezu’s laboratory and Waseda University.

 

 

 

Each lecture was followed by a lively Q&A session and discussion, with questions actively raised by faculty members and students from both Japan and overseas.

 

During the lunch break, a demonstration of AIREC (a humanoid robot under development) was held, attracting much attention from the audience.

The symposium concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Shigeki Sugano (Dean, School of Science and Engineering, Waseda University), former leader of the unit.
