The online course “Sport Safety: A Guide to Preventing Sudden Death in Sport”, produced by Associate Professor Yuri Hosokawa of Faculty of Sport Sciences, has been launched on edX, an online platform that delivers free educational content worldwide.
This course aims to provide an overview of methods to establish and implement a safer sports environment by understanding ways to mitigate risks from the top three causes of sudden deaths in sport: sudden cardiac arrest, head and neck injuries, and exertional heat stroke.
The course welcomes students who want to pursue their studies and career in physical education, sports medicine, and athletic training; teachers, coaches, and clinical practitioners who wish to review risk management in organized physical activity; and anyone who may serve as a first responder at sporting events.
To find out more about Dr. Hosokawa’s motivations behind this course and why it’s so important to lay the foundation for sport safety for the benefit of all, take a look at her interview with the University’s Provost Koichi Suga here.
This course is available after registering for an edX account. Access to the lecture videos and discussion forums is free, however access to quizzes and the issuing of certificates of completion requires a fee.
