From February 17 to March 15, 2022, the online lecture “Current Issues in 21st Century Sport” was given by Prof. Chadwick Simon from EmLyon Bussines School, serving as a visiting faculty member at Waseda for the 2021 academic year. The lecture spanned 15 sessions.
As the lecture title implies, the course dealt with issues surrounding the current sports industry, based on the students’ individual interests. In class, discussions were held in small groups using breakout rooms and were based on the students’ awareness of the issues. The students were also guided to choose a research theme while eliciting their own opinions, so that they could find their own problems and form their own opinions on how to solve them.
The course outline is as follows (extract from syllabus)
The course will focus on a series of mega trends that are currently impacting upon sport. It will examine where and how this is happening, and what the implications are for organising, leading and managing sport. The module will extensively utilise case studies including City Football Group, Qatar’s staging of the 2022 World Cup, and China’s sports strategy to highlight some of the most important developments currently taking place in elite professional sport.
