Event Report: International Symposium “Multi-level structural and functional adaptability of skeletal muscles and the whole-body”

On March 2, 2022, Waseda University’s Health Promotion : The Joy of Sports and Exercise Unit (Top Global University) held an international symposium in collaboration with KU Louvain (Belgium) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

The symposium was held at Waseda University’s Higashifushimi Campus, with Waseda faculty and students participating from the audience, and overseas speakers presenting via webinar. The symposium was also broadcast live on YouTube.

At the symposium, the SGU Unit’s leader, Hiroaki Masaki, began the symposium with an opening address.
Presentations were divided into three parts, each moderated by Professor Yasuo Kawakami, Professor Koji Kanaoka, and Professor Masashi Miyashita.

The titles of the research presentations by the eight presenters at the symposium were as follow:

1.Dr. Benedict Vanwanseele (KU Louvain)
“Towards a biomechanically informed rehabilitation program for Achilles tendinopathy“

2. Dr. Hiroto Shiotani (Waseda University)
“Fascio-tendinous linkage in the human lower extremity”

3. Dr. Huub Maas (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
“The sensory consequences of myofascial linkages”

4. Ms. Carmela Julia Mantecón (Waseda University)
“Biceps femoris fascicles architecture changes upon knee flexion-extension”

5. Dr. Simon Brumagne (KU Louvain)
“Effects of muscle vibration on proprioception in low back pain”

6. Dr. Hiroshi Akuzawa (Waseda University)
“The acute effect of local vibration on the muscle activity pattern in the trunk, leg, and foot muscles”

7. Dr. Sebastiaan Dalle (KU Louvain)
“Myogenic and stress factors are differentially expressed in skeletal muscle of older adults with low muscle strength”

8. Mr. Yusei Tataka (Waseda University)
“Acute effects of exercise and meal consumption on appetite-related hormones in young men”

After the eight speakers, Dr. Katrien Koppo of the KU Louvain gave closing remarks.


Through these activities, the Health and Sport Science Center will continue to promote the internationalization of education and research, aiming to become the center of an international joint education and research guidance system in the field of sport science.
