Event Report: Online workshop “How to use cell phone location data”

Associate Professor Munechika Katayama

On March 4, 2022, the Center for Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy held an online workshop on cell phone location data, gaining much attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Munechika Katayama, an Associate Professor of Economics from the Faculty of Political Science and Economics, explained the details of mobile location data and talked about how to use it in academic research projects. In particular, he talked about his project that tries to quantify the impact of questions submitted by the Diet members on the overtime work of Japanese bureaucrats.

There were a variety of participants with different backgrounds ranging from undergraduate students to faculty members, and from Waseda to other universities and private sectors. There were active discussions among them about the potential use of the dataset. Many of them were excited about what we could do with this unique dataset. Jake Underland, one of the participants from the School of Political Science and Economics, joined in the event as he had been interested in using mobile data for possible future research. After the workshop, he said, “The creative use of mobile location data to measure overtime work was inspiring. It opens up avenues to use mobile location data to get approximate data where official records are scarce or insufficient.”

We plan to hold additional hands-on workshops that aim to get familiar with the mobile location data and engage in actual research projects utilizing it in the coming academic year. Prof. Katayama said, “I really enjoyed talking about the mobile location data and my project. It was great for me to know that many graduate and undergraduate students at Waseda are interested in research projects that take advantage of the uniqueness of the mobile location dataset. I am very looking forward to working with them.”
