6th Rikoh Tea Time Symposium “My Career Choice”

On November 13, 2020, the University invited Hisano Niki, Hakuhodo’s director of strategic planning, and Tianshu Li, Junior Researcher (Assistant Professor) at the Waseda Research Institute for Science and Engineering, to participate as lecturers in the symposium, which was conducted online and consisted of two parts: a Zoom Webinar and group sessions at breakout rooms. 52 participants, which included undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and students from the neighboring Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School, were in attendance. The symposium was an opportunity for participants to hear from these two lecturers who are active in their respective business and academic fields and think about their own career path and choices.

Participants’ Voices

This was a valuable opportunity to think about how I want to live in the future. One message that resonated with me was the notion that I “should not panic while in high school and that I should try out various things.” I was also relieved to meet people in the group session who share the same concerns as me.

It was very nice to hear from lecturers with varied careers. I want to apply what they said to my life in high school. I also received detailed advice regarding my own path forward, which I will refer to when making my own career choices.

From these two lecturers, I learned that, even if you are from the hard sciences, there are still various career options available. In the group sessions, I was able to interact with people whom I normally would not have the chance to speak to, such as students from other Schools and PhD students. This made it a really valuable opportunity.

I am happy I was able to hear from these two individuals from different career paths. In the group session, they discussed the notion that even if you are from the hard sciences, you can utilize your ability to speak logically to your advantage when looking for work. This is something I hope to apply in my job search.
