  • MEXT Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology adopts program to develop support models for women researchers (2006 to 2008)
  • Poppins Nursery School Waseda, a daycare facility certified by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, opens and is co-managed by Waseda University in collaboration with Poppins Corporation until 2013

  • Announcement of Waseda University Gender Equality Declaration
  • Launch of Gender Equality Promotion Committee (Office for Promotion of Gender Equality)
  • Mutsuko Asakura (Professor at Faculty of Law) assumes post as first Director of the Gender Equality Promotion Committee
AY 2008
  • Formulation of the Waseda University Gender Equality Basic Plan
  • Implementation of survey regarding awareness and the state of gender equality promotion at Waseda University
  • Opening of Career Early Researcher Support Center on Nishiwaseda Campus (Building No. 60, 2F)

  • Private university joint symposium “Expand the circle of gender equality” and adoption/announcement of Joint Declaration of the 10 Private Universities for Gender Equality Promotion
  • Career Early Research Support Center changes name to Work Life Balance Support Center
  • Establishment of joint Gender Equality Promotion Office on Nishiwaseda Campus (Building No. 60, 2F)
AY 2010
  • Miho Saito (Professor at Faculty of Human Sciences) assumes post as Vice President in charge of gender equality
AY 2011
  • Opening of Nursery Center for children of students, faculty, and staff on Waseda Campus (Building No. 27-9, 1F)
AY 2012
  • Nursery Center for children of students, faculty, and staff relocated to Building No. 99, 1F of Waseda Campus
  • Launch of Waseda Vision 150’s Promotion of Gender Equality and Diversity Project
AY 2013
  • Fusako Koshikawa (Professor at Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences) assumes post as third Director of the Gender Equality Promotion Committee
  • Symposium held on the state of gender equality at universities, and related issues, co-hosted by Waseda Vision 150’s Promotion of Gender Equality and Diversity Project

  • Waseda Supporters Club (WSC) Members Fund opens course on diversity and gender equality (open course at the Global Education Center)
  • Public round table discussion on diversity and gender equality at Waseda University held
  • Establishment of nursing rooms on Waseda, Nishiwaseda, Toyama, and Tokorozawa campuses
  • Launch of system for research support for life events (research and employment support during pregnancy and child-rearing)

  • Gender Equality Promotion Committee reorganized as Equality and Diversity Promotion Committee (Office for Promotion of Equality and Diversity)
  • Tetsuya Yaguchi (Professor at the Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences) assumes post as first Director of Equality and Diversity Promotion Committee
  • Keiko Hata (Professor at Faculty of Social Sciences) assumes post as Vice President in charge of equality and diversity promotion
  • Office for Promotion of Equality and Diversity relocated from Nishiwaseda Campus (Building No. 60, 2F) to Waseda Campus (Okuma Kaikan Bld. (No.20), 2F)
  • Work Life Balance Support Center (Building No. 60, 2F) reopened as an annex office of the Office for Promotion of Equality and Diversity

  • Announcement of Waseda University Promotion of Diversity Declaration
  • Symposium on diversity at Waseda University held to commemorate the first-year anniversary of the establishment of the Office for Promotion of Equality and Diversity
  • Nursery Center for children of students, faculty, and staff established on Nishiwaseda Campus (Building No. 60, 2F)
  • Creation and distribution of Guide to Consideration and Accommodation for Sexual Minority Students (for faculty and staff)
  • Libraries allow visitors to bring their children (Central Library, Toyama Library, Tokorozawa Library)
AY 2018
  • Chiharu Tokoro (Professor at Faculty of Science and Engineering) assumes post as second Director of Equality and Diversity Promotion Committee
  • Takashi Aso (Professor at Faculty of International Research and Education) assumes post as Vice President in charge of international public relations and equality and diversity promotion
  • Miho Saito (Professor at Faculty of Human Sciences) and Hitomi Sasaki (administrator) assume their posts as the first female Executive Vice Presidents. Hitomi Sasaki is the first female administrator who belong to the executive board.
  • Implementation of survey regarding awareness and the state of diversity promotion at the University
  • Enhancement of Female Researchers Mentoring System (increased number of mentors and placement at four campuses)
  • Began providing accommodations to attendees of on-campus lectures and events (e.g. at the 2018 graduation ceremony, information support was provided for attendees with hearing impairments in the form of sign-language and speech-to-text interpretation)
AY 2019
  • Participation in the Tokyo block of the National Network Core Institute for the Initiative for Realizing Diversity in the Research Environment (2018 Science and Technology Human Resources Development Subsidy Programs)
  • Lecture “Practices at Yale University and What to Expect from Waseda University” held as part of Promotion of Gender Equality and Diversity Project (Vice President Frances Rosenbluth)
  • The University reevaluates the “necessity to collect information about gender” on campus, in consideration of sexual minorities
  • The University hands out coupons for company-led babysitter dispatch services as part of assistance for users of company-led babysitting services
  • Creation and publishing of video content for self-management seminar for faculty and staff on diversity and inclusion
  • Commencement of exchange classes between employees of special subsidiaries and students
AY 2020
  • Expansion and enhancement of the system for restricting overtime work for employees who are raising children, etc.
  • Received “Silver Certification” in the PRIDE Index, an evaluation index for initiatives for LGBTQ and other sexual minorities.
AY 2021
  • Opened a nursery room for students, faculty and staff on the Tokorozawa Campus (Building 100, 3F)
  • Eimination of age restrictions for the “Early Career Support” Grants for Special Research Projects ‘”Tokutei Kadai”) on Specific Topics.
  • Symposium commemorating the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Diversity Promotion Office “Promoting Diversity and Beyond”
  • Certified by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare as a “child-rearing support company” as a general employer that conforms to the standards under the Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Rasing Next-Generation Children (Kurumin Certification)
AY 2022
  • Kyoko Ishida (Professor, Faculty of Law) was appointed as the 3rd Chair of the Diversity Promotion Committee.
  • Began applying various systems to support work-life balance and personnel to “partners” and their relatives who are in a situation similar to that of a marriage with faculty and staff.
  • In recognition of our support for balancing work with childcare and nursing care, as well as the expansion of the application of the system to our partners in various personnel systems, we received a “Gold certification” in the PRIDE Index.
AY 2023
  • Hatsue Shinohara (Professor, Faculty of International Research and Education) was appointed as Director in charge of Diversity Promotion, International Public Relations, and International Student Dormitory WISH.
  • Received Gold certification for the second consecutive year in the PRIDE Index, and evaluation index for initiatives for LGBTQ+ and other sexual minorities.
  • Conducted “WASEDA University Diversity Promotion-Related Attitudes and Fact-Finding Questionnaire”
  • Formulation of an action plan for FY2024~FY2026 regarding the “General Employer Action Plan” based on the “Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Rasing Next-Generation Children”
  • Keio University and Waseda University co-hosted the Diversity Symposium
AY 2024
  • Kyoko Ishida (Professor, Faculty of Law) was reappointed as the 4th Chair of the Diversity Promotion Committee.
  • In accordance with the revision of the Act on the Promotion of the Elimination of Discrimination on the Grounds of Disability and the obligation to provide reasonable accommodation, the Basic Policy on Support for Students with Disabilities was revised
  • Received Gold certification for the third consecutive year in the PRIDE Index, an index that evaluates initiatives for LGBTQ+ and other sexual minorities.
  • Establishment of a “childcare community” on campus using the open chat fuction of SNS
