To kick off the 2023 academic year, the Global Education Center hosted the 10th Waseda University Writing Forum on April 5, 2023 at Building 3 of Waseda Campus. The annual forum gathers the Academic Writing Program’s writing tutors, shidoins (instructors), and professors to share ideas on how to improve assisting writers from all over the Waseda campuses.
The Forum began with five poster presentations by tutors and RAs, in English and in Japanese. The titles show their research on guiding writers:
- 「一文一義」再考—言語学の観点から—
- Sessions with Scientific Papers – The Inside Out
- 大学1年生のレポートへの文章チュータリング ―学生の不安とライティング・センターにおける支援―
- Transforming Tutor Trainings: Waseda’s Writing Center
- 卒論のセッションへのJチューターの規範意識―アンケート調査を用いて―
The poster session was followed by a lecture by the guest speaker, Takaki Shimabayashi of the National Archives of Japan. Entitled “Career Path from Academic Writing: Writing (Text) and Records,” Prof. Shimabayashi’s lecture introduced the National Archives and shared how tutors’ and shidoins’ experiences in guiding writers can be useful in their future careers.
The event concluded with a general assembly wherein members of the Academic Writing Program—more than a hundred strong including the professors and staff—convened and prepared for the incoming academic year.
