Overview
The purpose of this research project is to deepen research on Japanese history and culture by examining and investigating Japanese studies from the collective perspective of various Japan research centers located in Asia and to explore the future direction and practices of Japanese studies.
In the Graduate School of Social Science, there are many faculty members conducting research on the theory of Japanese history, theory of Japanese culture, history of Sino-Japanese relations, and the Chinese character cultural sphere. There are also many graduate students, including international students, aiming to do research on various topics in Japanese studies or the history of their country’s relations with Japan. Once they have completed their studies, many of these students later engage in such research in various parts of Asia.
Therefore, in this research group, individual institute members, researchers, and guest researchers of specific Japanese research subcommittees in fields such as history, culture, society, etc., will conduct minute and deep research development and progression on their topic and then bring their individual results together to make Japanese research comprehensive.
In addition, in order to engage in Japanese studies from a more multilateral and complex approach, we intend to carry out joint international symposiums with Japanese research institutes from various parts of Asia. By using the theme of “Asia’s Japan” as the base, we will investigate Japanese culture and civilizations from various perspectives, while keeping in mind the historical past and the current world. In this research group, we aim to reconsider Japan and broaden our thinking to include the Asia region as a whole.
On top of such research, we intend to explore Japan and Japanese studies in a broader sense and to discover new ideas and methods of thinking. We also strive to find the best way to continue the mutual exchange and understanding between Japan and other Asian countries and maintain the future of Japanese studies.
