Short Bio

Shiro SEGAWA is a professor at Faculty of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University, and serves as the Program Manager of Waseda University Journalism School since its inauguration in 2008. He specializes in journalism studies. He is also a former deputy managing editor at the Mainichi Shimbun, a nationwide newspaper.

SEGAWA joined the Mainichi Shimbun in 1978 as a reporter and served mainly as a science, environmental and medical reporter. He also served as a correspondent in Washington, D.C., Head of the Division of Science and Environment News, later a Deputy Managing Editor, Editorialist for the Mainichi Shimbun. In 1998, he was awarded the JCJ Incentive Award (current JCJ Award) as a main member of the reporter group for the coverage of depleted uranium ammunition. He was also awarded Science Journalist Prize in 2017 for writing a book “Kagaku Hodo no Shinsho”. SEGAWA is the board director of NPO organizations, the FactCheck Initiative Japan (FIJ) and the Journalism Practitioners’ Forum of Japan (J-Forum).

SEGAWA graduated from Department of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo in 1977, majoring history of science and philosophy of science.
