Short Bio
Sylvie Brosseau, after receiving her diploma in architecture and studuing city planning in Paris, came to Tokyo in 1988 as a fellow of the Japanese Government at the Tokyo Institute of Architecture, section of architecture. She continued her studies at Tokyo University, where she focused on the introduction of western urban models in Japan in the late nineteenth century and the renewal of urban spaces. Later she turned to the study of public parks, their conditions of creation and purposes, their layouts and specific features, role in city planning and social functions. This interest led to a historical research on the Japanese way of feeling nature, perceiving and building landscapes, developing particular relations between nature and urban space in present day Tokyo.
