Report on the Ninth East Asian Humanities Forum

 

The Research Institute for Letters, Arts and Sciences at Waseda University (hereafter simply “RILAS”) organized the Ninth East Asian Humanities Forum from December 16th to 17th in 2017, under the joint sponsorship of MEXT-Supported Program for the Strategic Research Foundation at Private Universities “Humanities in modern Japan and the East Asian Cultural Sphere: The Crisis of the humanities in East Asia and Its Reconstruction”. The theme of the forum was “Reconstruction of the Humanities in East Asia”. This forum also doubled as RILAS’s own annual forum.
  This forum has been held since 2009 by the five partner universities: Waseda University (Japan), Hanyang University (Korea), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), Tshinghua University (China) and Nankai University (China) for the purposes of strengthening academic relationships in East Asia. The Ninth Forum was held in Ono Auditorium at Waseda University. In addition to the twenty-four presenters and moderators from the five universities above, the attendance of many professors and students from Waseda University activated the forum.
  After Senior Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Science, Professor Oyabu Yasushi, delivered an opening address, Vice President, Professor Lee Sungsi introduced each moderator. The keynote presenters were Professor Chiu Chin-jung from National Taiwan University who gave a presentation under the title of “In Search of New Directions for Humanities Education”, and Professor Kaizawa Hajime from Waseda University who gave a presentation entitled “Basic Questions on the Methodology of Humanities and a New Approach to Its Modern Problems: On the Basis of Theoretical Research by G. G. Shpet and M. M. Bakhtin”.
  In session I, Professor Liu Shi from Tsinghua University acted as a moderator. Professor Kim Tae-yong from Hanyang University, Professor Li Guangxin from Namkai University, Professor Peng Lin from Tsinghua University, and Professor Shinkawa Tokio gave presentations and discussed the theme of history and philology.
  In session II, Professor Luo Zhenya from Nankai University served as a moderator. Professor Oh Sookyung from Hanyang University, Professor Senno Takumasa from Waseda University, Professor Wang Cheng from Tsinghua University, Professor Yoo Sunggho from Hanyang University, and Professor Zhang Lingxia from Tsinghua University discussed and presented papers on the theme of literary art and culture.
  On the second day, in session III, the moderator was Professor Chiu Chin-jung from National Taiwan University. Professor Hsiao Li-chun from National Taiwan University, Professor Jinno Takashi from Waseda University, Professor Tsai Chu-ching from National Taiwan University, and Professor Yang Chuanqing from Nankai University argued on the theme of history, sociology, and philosophy, following their presentations.
  In session IV, the theme was linguistics and literature and Professor Seo Kyeong-seak from Hanyang University acted as a moderator. Professor Chen Qianli from Nankai University, Professor Peck Jeeyoung from Hanyang University, Professor Ren Zengxia from Nankai University and Professor Wang Jinghui from Tsinghua University gave presentations.
  After all the sessions concluded, participants had a lively exchange of opinions during the break, excursion and dinner. The forum ended with a closing address by Deputy Dean for International Affairs, Professor Kono Kimiko of Waseda University.
  During this two-day forum, participants active in the forefront of various fields had spirited discussions in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. The Tenth East Asian Humanities Forum will be held at Nankai University in China in 2018.
