Facilities of the Waseda University History Museum

The Waseda University History Museum has two facilities in the Waseda Campus (the museum) and the Higashifushimi Campus (the university archives). Please be careful when visiting the museum.

1. A Museum Looking at the Past, Present, and Future of Waseda University

On March 20, 2018, the Waseda University History Museum opened in Building 1 next to the main gate of the Waseda campus.

The museum displays documents and information on the history of Waseda University from a variety of perspectives so that visitors can make new discoveries according to their own interests. And the museum is an intellectually stimulating facility that invites repeated visits by combining thematic and special exhibits with constantly updated exhibits that utilize various digital media. Not only the students, faculty, staff, and alumni but the junior high and high school students are welcomed to learn more about Waseda University.

2. Research the History of Waseda University at the Archives

The Higashifushimi Archives, formerly known as the University Archives until March 31, 2022 is located on the 5th floor of Building 79 on the Higashifushimi Campus.

The Higashifushimi Archives has the collection of documents related to the founder Shigenobu Okuma and his colleagues, the university administration, alumni, and so. It also provides browsing and copying services for the collection.

It is also in charge of the secretariat for the Waseda University 150-Year Chronicle, which started in 2010, and is promoting the project.

3. Businesses of the Higashifushimi Archives

Organization and Publication of Documents
The Higashifushimi Archives preserves and organizes the documents and materials and make publicly available.

Browsing and Photocopy Services
Higashifushimi Archives offers browsing and copying services for its collection. Please allow a few weeks for checking the personal or sensitive information on the documents before browsing.

Collection of Documents
The Higashifushimi Archives are collecting documents related to the founders of the university, related individuals, the university administration, and alumni.

Publication
In 2003, as part of the project to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Waseda University, a project to compile Documents related to Okuma Shigenobu was taken up, the first volume of which was published in October 2004.

Since then, one volume was published each year until the project concluded in March 2015. The collection contains approximately 7,400 letters addressed to Shigenobu Okuma whose locations are verifiable.

In October 2021, the 1st volume of Waseda University 150 Years Chronicle was published.
