【TGU Global Japanese Studies】International Symposium “Rethinking the -Author- as an Agent of Cultural Production”

At Waseda University, we aim to advance the “Waseda Goes Global” Plan selected by MEXT’s Top Global University Project and dramatically improve the quality of education and research in the six internationally established model units with prioritized funding.

Global Japanese Studies, one of the six model units, intends to develop research and education standards in the field of Japanese studies on a global scale in cooperation with Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Many programs and symposiums have been held as part of the collaboration so far:

January 2016 “Waves on Different Shores: Comparing the New Cinemas of France, Brazil, and Japan,” a lecture by Professor Richard Peña (Columbia University)
December 2015 “Kanichi Asakawa and the Current Study of Japanese Medieval History” Symposium
July 2015 “Japanese Literature and Translation – Soseki, Akutagawa, Murakami, and Beyond,” a lecture by Professor Emeritus Jay Rubin (Harvard University)and Project Professor Motoyuki Shibata ( the University of Tokyo)

March 2015 “NEW HORIZONS IN JAPANESE LITERARY AND CULTURAL STUDIES” International Symposium co-hosted by Columbia University and Waseda University

This past March, international workshops “RETHINKING JAPANESE LITERARY HISTORY – Periodization, Genre, and Media” and “ACTING OUT” were held at Columbia University and UCLA, respectively. At “ACTING OUT,” writer Yoko Tawada, UCLA’s Associate Professor Michael Emmerich, and Waseda’s Professor Miho Matsunaga at the Faculty of Letters, Arts, and Sciences joined participants in a multilingual public reading performance done in English, Japanese, German, and other languages. Following this event, a three-day international symposium titled “IMAGING THE WORLD IN PREMODERN JAPAN” was organized by 20 Japanese studies scholars from eleven universities and three research institutions from both Japan and the United States.

Furthermore, Waseda University will host the international symposium “Rethinking the <Author> as an Agent of Cultural Production” on July 26. The symposium will examine the roles and functions of an author through lectures and discussions on various cultural genres, including art, literature, and performing arts. We invite you to explore the creative world of cultural production.
