¡Hola todos!
Good news has come during spring break!
The UCLA Mariachi Tour group will come to Japan in May and perform live at Waseda University. It also includes commentary by Professor Steven Loza of the UCLA School of Music.
Mariachi is a representative folk music of Mexico and a representative music of Central and South America, along with Andean countries, Argentina’s folklore, and Cuban music, which is famous for the movie “Buena Vista Social Club.” Mariachis wear traditional costumes and perform on instruments such as the violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela (small guitar), and guitarrón (large guitar). Mariachi is played in Mexico during festivals, banquets, holidays, fiestas, and other national events.
On this tour, two bands will visit Waseda: “Mariachi de Uclatlán,” which is made up of UCLA students, and “Mariachi Los Camperos,” a two-time Grammy Award winner conducted by world-renowned musician Jesús “Chuy” Guzmán.
Why not take this opportunity to listen to mariachi, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and experience Mexican music and culture?
