Toward the Realization of a Carbon Neutral Society by WASEDA

The Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society was established on December 1, 2022.

Through our cutting-edge initiatives in the fields of education and research to contribute to carbon neutrality, and based on the principles of the SDGs, Waseda University issued the “WASEDA Carbon Net Zero Challenge” declaration on November 1, 2021, with the aim of creating new global values that integrate its knowledge in these areas. To bring about the realization of a carbon neutral society, it is necessary to bring together knowledge in fields ranging from the humanities, social sciences, and new multi-disciplinary fields, on top of the technological domain that is focused on the science and engineering disciplines. It is vital to work simultaneously on solving the social problems of all countries alongside global environmental issues from multiple perspectives, such as the environment, society, and the economy. In view of this, Waseda University has established the Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society, leveraging our strengths as a comprehensive university and bringing together our research capabilities that extend beyond the conventional frameworks of humanities and sciences, with the aim of realizing carbon neutrality towards achieving the SDGs across the world.

Producing capable students who contribute to the future of humankind and society,
who take on active roles in the real world and give back their knowledge to Waseda University
through education and industry-academia collaboration.

The Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society will build this ecosystem and enhance the University’s sustainability, creating synergy between education and research.

Center's Work

The Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society was established as a hub for the extensive promotion of cutting-edge research by top-level faculty, the nurturing of doctoral human resources, and social contribution, with a view to achieving Waseda University’s declaration of carbon neutrality. While using the carbon neutrality hub as the foundation for bringing together researchers and collaborating with research organizations, affiliated research institutes, and other organizations, we aim to create a more sustainable and active organization by granting incentives to top researchers. We believe the establishment of the Center will further reinvigorate the research and educational capabilities of every faculty.

The Center’s work is summarized as follows:
