The world today faces complex and long-term challenges, among which the realization of a carbon-neutral society is one of the most pressing. Such challenges cannot be addressed by any single discipline or technology alone. Rather, they require the convergence of knowledge across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as collaboration among diverse stakeholders to create new value and innovative solutions.
Since its founding, Waseda University has upheld the principles of “Independence of Scholarship,” “Practical Application of Scholarship,” and “Fostering of Good Citizens.” By embracing diverse perspectives and encouraging interdisciplinary engagement, the University has continued to respond to society’s changing needs. Building on this tradition, I am committed to further strengthening connections among scholars, students, industry, government, and society, both within the University and beyond. Through the integrated advancement of research, education, and societal engagement, we will further advance our efforts to translate knowledge into tangible social impact.
The transition to a carbon-neutral society should not be viewed solely as a technological endeavor. It also calls for the transformation of social norms, institutions, and human values. Addressing this challenge demands an inclusive and interdisciplinary approach that brings together diverse forms of expertise and experience.
In this context, the Waseda Center for a Carbon-Neutral Society (WCANS) serves as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and co-creation. By connecting diverse stakeholders across sectors and disciplines, the Center fosters the integration of knowledge and accelerates the translation of research outcomes into tangible social value. I am confident that the work of WCANS will contribute to new pathways toward a sustainable future.
Such aspirations cannot be realized overnight. Yet through mutual respect, trust, and sustained collaboration, meaningful progress becomes possible. By harnessing the collective strengths of the Waseda community and its partners, we will continue to create knowledge and value that contribute to society and the world.
I sincerely welcome your continued partnership and support as we work together toward the realization of a carbon-neutral society. Through the convergence of knowledge and a shared commitment to co-creation, let us forge new pathways toward a sustainable future for generations to come.
