Video Message from the Italian Olympic Committee

Waseda University and Tokorozawa City in Saitama Prefecture will serve as hosts for the Italian Republic Olympic team’s pre-2020 Olympics camp.

We received a video message from the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) prior to next year’s Games. The video features Italian Olympians talking about their excitement for the pre-camp.

Exchange of the Italian Olympic Committee with Waseda University

Waseda University has built a close cooperative relationship with Italy over the years, starting with an academic exchange agreement with the Sapienza University of Rome in 1986. Waseda has now concluded agreements with 33 higher education institutions in Italy, allowing for the exchange of students and faculty members.
Waseda University has a deep connection with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. More than 400 students and alumni of Waseda University have participated in the Games as athletes, including Mikio Oda (men’s triple jump) who became the first Japanese gold medalist at the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

In October 2018, prior to the Tokyo 2020 Games, Waseda and the city of Tokorozawa signed a formal agreement with the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) to host a pre-camp.

Previous exchange activities with CONI have included an international female athlete symposium. The symposium was held in September 2018 and included physicians and nutritionists from CONI. The Italian national swimming team also conducted a pre-World Championship training camp at Waseda University’s Tokorozawa campus in 2019. Our students also served as volunteer interpreters for the Italian national walking team during their training camp in Tokorozawa City.

Welcoming Athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Pre-Camp

For the Tokyo 2020 Pre-Camp, Italian track and field, fencing, and swimming athletes will use the facilities at Waseda University’s Tokorozawa Campus (Mikio Oda Memorial Track & Field Stadium, Sports Hall and Aqua Arena).

Click here for a detailed introduction to our exercise facilities. The Tokorozawa Konpeki dormitory, completed in June 2020, will be used as a lodging facility for the athletes.

Hosting the Italian Olympic team’s pre-camp will be a valuable opportunity for students to learn about internationalization and diversity through participating in volunteer activities. We will continue to work with Tokorozawa City to prepare for next year’s Tokyo 2020 Games.
