Horizon Europe Seminar at Waseda University
The First Step toward European Collaborative Research: What to Do and Where to Start

On July 30, 2026, in Brussels, Belgium, the Government of Japan signed an agreement to become associated with the EU research and innovation funding programme, Horizon Europe.
This development is expected to make it easier for Japanese universities, research institutions, and companies to participate in international collaborative research networks centered in Europe. Under Pillar II, “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness,” Japanese universities and research institutions will be able to apply for and receive funding in selected European collaborative research projects. This represents an important opportunity to develop concrete research collaboration with European institutions.
At the same time, participation in Horizon Europe requires an understanding of many practical issues, including how to identify Calls, how to participate in international consortia, how to prepare proposals, how roles and responsibilities are assigned at the application stage, and how contracts and research management are handled after selection.
To support Waseda researchers and research support staff in taking their first step, the Center for Research Strategy will host an internal seminar. The main speaker will be Mr. Rodolphe Doité of FARI – AI for the Common Good Institute, a Brussels-based AI research institute. Mr. Doité has extensive practical experience in EU research funding and research coordination, especially in relation to Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
This seminar is not limited to AI or robotics, as information will be provided on the entire Horizon Europe Programme. Researchers and staff from any field who are interested in Horizon Europe, European collaborative research, or research support for international funding schemes are welcome to participate.

Note: This event is intended for researchers and staff affiliated with Waseda University. However, several observers from MEXT and other government-related organizations are expected to attend.

In June 2021 it secured nearly €10M from the EU’s Relance & Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU), selected by the Brussels Government to drive a responsible digital transition, and has since attracted €11M more in research and innovation funding.
