On June 27, Waseda University’s Advanced Collaborative Research Organization for Smart Society (ACROSS, Chairperson: Professor Yasuhiro Hayashi, Faculty of Science and Engineering) was selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to conduct a government-commissioned project on developing voltage regulator technology for electric power systems and enhancing coordination to expand renewable energy resource.
This project, in response to re-examination of the renewable energy fixed price purchase system, aims to develop a remote output control system, mainly for photovoltaic (solar) generators, and to create a remote control method to distribute electricity output fairly among clean energy producers. Moreover, the project’s goals include further expanding renewable energy cooperation, and 7 organizations will collaborate for three years from this June to February 2019 to achieve this target.
Specifically, the verification project will observe power output of regional solar energy facilities at power company central electric distribution centers. This information will be used to design output control devices and management systems.
A power conditioning system (PCS) with a regulator device will be installed at electric power suppliers’ facilities, and the efficiency of simplex and duplex communication systems will be tested. In addition, a monitoring system which takes energy management system and simultaneous accumulated energy operation into account will be verified, and the project will develop a sophisticated power conditioning system with autonomous control.
ACROSS will cooperate with other organizations on R&D to investigate the efficiency of output control system with duplex communication, link energy management system organizations together, and raise the sophistication of power conditioning systems.
Through this project, Waseda and ACROSS aim to move towards the national goals for accelerating implementation of renewable energy.
