True to its traditions and in response to contemporary needs, Waseda University has developed the Global Leadership Fellows Program in cooperation with prestigious American universities (Dartmouth College, Georgetown University, University of Chicago, and University of Washington, New York University).
Waseda University was founded by Japanese statesman and later prime minister Shigenobu Okuma in 1882. Throughout its 130 years of university history, the principle the founder put forward “Harmonization of the East and West”, has become significantly relevant to the current world of diversified economy, politics, and culture.
Asia being the emerging economic power as well as the epicenter of geopolitical activities, much attentions are poured into this region. As the U.S. shifts its policy focusing on Asia, leaders who understand Asian values and societies are in critical need and will be in charge of defining global future.
Japan’s “presence” in Asia is now proportionately smaller economically, however Japan has always been a beacon in Asia for social, economic, and political progress. Its future leaders must become more deeply engaged with the world on both sides of the Pacific.
To nurture future leaders for the coming Asian century, Waseda University and the prominent American universities (stated above) have committed to establish the Global Leadership Fellows Program (GLFP). The aim of the program is to identify students of promise in multiple fields of study and promote their development as leaders in a world of ever-changing demands and opportunities.
