Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (IURS) Wins Two Awards at APA International Division’s “Planning Excellence Awards”

IURS Wins Two Awards at APA International Division’s “Planning Excellence Awards” in Public Involvement and Environmental Planning categories.

The Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (IURS), one of  Waseda’s Project Research Institutes, has been actively organizing the Totsuka Community-Based Collaborative Recovery Activity Research Group with the aim of promoting “Disaster-Resilient City Planning (pre-disaster reconstruction)” in the Totsuka area of Shinjuku Ward, which is where Waseda Campus is located, and has continued to work in collaboration with local residents, government, schools, and others.

This research group is led by Professor Emritus Shigeru Sato from IURS, Professor Osamu Soda from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Assistant Professor Tomoyuki Mashiko from Faculty of Social Sciences, and Professor Tetsuya Yaguchi from the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The group has been promoting community collaboration that integrates practice and education, such as providing disaster prevention classes at elementary schools in the Totsuka area.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These activities were submitted to the Planning Excellence Awards hosted by the American  Planning Association (APA) International Division, and the project won in two categories: Public Involvement and Environmental Planning. IURS will continue to contribute to improving regional disaster prevention and recovery capabilities through the social implementation of research results.
