  • Presentation: The Genealogy of the “Märchenoper” in German Music of Romanticism: With a focus on E. Humperdinck: YAMAMOTO, Mariko
  • Abstract: The term “Märchenoper” (“fairy-tale operas”) is narrowly defined as “operas based on Märchen (fairy tales),” but in a broader sense it can be understood as “operas that include elements such as materials from folklore, the appearance of fairies, and magic.” The most widely known Märchenoper is probably Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.”
In view of the historical and regional differences and changes in Märchenoper, this presentation will focus especially on “Hänsel und Gretel” and Humperdinck’s other operas from two perspectives: 1) folklore culture and Grimms’ fairy tales in 19th-century German culture; and 2) historical developments regarding R. Wagner’s music dramas. This will help highlight the multi-layered characteristics of Märchenoper in the German-speaking world. At the same time, I would like to approach the reality of Märchenoper by focusing on the actual performance of Märchenoper from the perspective of opera reception.
