【Purpose of the Event】
The year 2024 is a turning point for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in both Japan and the United States. In Japan, the Supreme Court ruled in July 2024 that the provisions of the former Eugenic Protection Law concerning sterilization operations for people with disabilities were in violation of the constitution. However, there remain many issues related to SRHR in Japan.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the debate over the right to abortion has always been one of the key issues in the US presidential election, and concerns have been raised about the impact of the presidential election held in November 2024 on SRHR.
This symposium will discuss challenges and prospects for the situation surrounding SRHR in Japan and the United States.
