  • Presenter: KOISHI, Katsura
  • Affiliation: Department of Culture and History, Kwansei Gakuin University
  • Title: “The Niederrheinisches Musikfest and F. Mendelssohn”
  • Language: Japanese
  • Abstract: The Niederrheinisches Musikfest, which began in 1818 in Elberfeld, was held for two to three days at Pentecost in Düsseldorf, Köln, Aachen, and other cities in the Niederrhein region and was held on a rotating basis. The Musikfest itself continued to exist until after the Second World War, but this presentation will focus on the first half of the 19th century. It is known that F. Mendelssohn conducted the Musikfest seven times between 1833 and 1842, performing his own works and other works. This presentation will introduce (1) an overview of the Niederrheinisches Musikfest, (2) the actual situation of Mendelssohn’s concerts, and (3) the relationship between churches and the performance of religious music performances. In particular, the second point will be clarified by introducing his letters and other documents to show how Mendelssohn, who had a regular job, prepared for his participation in the Musikfest. Through this, I would like to clarify a part of the concert situation in western Germany in the first half of the 19th century.
