Research Summary
In the ancient East Asian world, the “Chinese civilization” centered on the Yellow River basin, and its culture and way of life spread especially to surrounding regions. However, unique regional cultures have existed throughout various parts of China since ancient times. In particular, the culture of the Yangtze River basin holds significant importance in discussing “Chinese civilization” and has greatly influenced traditional Japanese culture. Since 2000, numerous bamboo and silk manuscripts from the Warring States, Qin, Han, Wei, and Jin periods have been unearthed in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, providing valuable clues for understanding regional culture. Utilizing the trust built with research institutions in China, this institute will continue and develop foundational research at the textual level and focus on elucidating the realities of the Yangtze River basin culture, primarily through excavated materials.
