Report of Monthly Regular Meeting July 2022 (The 204th Meeting of Opera Research Group)

Waseda Institute for Research in Opera and Music Theatre (WIROM), Comprehensive Research Organization, Waseda University

  • Time and Date: July 16th (Sat.) 2022, 16:30-18:00 (JST)
  • Format: Online meeting (Zoom)
  • Presenter: TSUJI, Masahiro
  • Position, Affiliation: Professor, School of Business Administration, Meiji University
  • Title: “Baroque Opera vs. Romanticism—Friendship and romantic love in Olympiade”
  • Language: Japanese
  • Abstract: The librettos written by Metastasio are often said to be the summit of all the librettos of operas in the Italian language or other European languages. While Romanticism has influenced greatly the sensibility of European and other countries’ audiences and listeners, audiences overinfluenced by Romanticism could not appreciate the worldview of Metastasio, in which friendship is more highly regarded than romantic love. I would like to explain the worldview of Metastasio and compare it with that of Romanticism.
  • Profile of Presenter: Professor of Meiji University. His research field is widespread, ranging from English and Italian literature to opera librettos.
  • Moderator: KASAHARA, Mariko
