- Title: “The diversification of the staging of “Der Rosenkavalier” in German-speaking countries in the last half of the twentieth century”
- Language: Japanese
- Abstract:
This presentation sheds light on a part of opera staging history in the last half of the 20th century by focusing on “Der Rosenkavalier”, by Richard Strauss. The first staging, in which the librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, was intimately involved, was a milestone in opera staging history, as it truly reflected the world of “Vienna in the era of Maria Theresia” in the libretto. Although the diversification of its staging has not been discussed often in the scholarly literature on this work, that does not mean that its staging has been handed down faithfully since the first occasion. This presentation clarifies the features of several productions in the last half of the 20th century by analyzing and comparing them and their critics’ observations with the mutual relationship between such stagings and contemporary discussions about opera staging. The first changes appeared in the visual dimension of the staging in Munich with the financial difficulties of the postwar period as a background. There were contrarily no changes until the 1960s in Salzburg and Vienna. In the last half of the 1960s, a number of productions were set at the end of the 19th century. This analysis shows how elements of the first staging were diversified in subsequent productions.
