On Wednesday 13 December, the Waseda University Brussels Office (WBO), in coordination with ULB and Waseda University, organised an international conference entitled “Global Sustainable Food Supply”.
The aim of the symposium was to present a wide range of research areas dealing with the crucial issue of sustainable food supply and consumption on a global scale. 3 themes were proposed for discussion:
- Soil health and crop science
- Carbon farming
- Food innovation, food sustainability, and trading
Some 17 Japanese and European researchers presented their research and, above all, discussed the question of how to understand, conserve and use soils effectively for agricultural purposes, in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way.
Given the obvious similarities between the Moonshot programme (Objective 5) in Japan and the A Soil Deal for Europe project under the Horizon-Europe programme, the conference also aimed to launch new scientific collaborations between these two powerful sources of funding. The richness of the discussions during the final panel “New Era of global sustainable food supply”, fuelled by numerous questions from the audience, left everyone full of enthusiasm for achieving this objective.
A very positive assessment, then, at the end of a very intense day of study and discussion, and one that could augur continuity next year with a new transcontinental conference on the issue of sustainability.
