On 15 September 2026, WBO held an international workshop entitled “Social Development of Secure and Privacy-Enhancing Technologies” at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was organized by Professor Kazue Sako of Waseda University, with Professor Meiko Jensen of Karlstad University, Sweden, serving as co-organizer.
The workshop brought together approximately 20 participants from Japan and Europe to exchange research insights and explore the challenges of developing and implementing technologies that protect personal data while supporting the development of digital society. Discussions focused on how privacy and data protection can be ensured in an increasingly data-driven world, particularly in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), where the responsible use of personal information has become an important issue.
Through research presentations and interactive discussions, participants explored a range of topics, including privacy-enhancing technologies, digital identity systems, data protection, and trustworthy AI. The discussions provided an opportunity to share perspectives on how these technologies can be developed and applied in ways that balance technological innovation with the protection of individuals’ privacy and rights.
At the end of the workshop, participants discussed opportunities for future joint research. The discussions laid the groundwork for further collaboration, and it is hoped that new research projects will emerge from this team of Japanese and European researchers.
