The Surprising Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

On September 13, Dr. Martin R. Lindley, a specialist in respiratory organs and a senior lecturer at Loughborough University, was invited to the 159th Colloquium on Sport Sciences  held at Waseda’s Tokorozawa Campus on September 13. After introducing the members and studies being undertaken at the Translational Chemical Biology Research Group where Dr. Lindley is an affiliate, he lectured on fatty acid intake.


Fatty acids have been recognized to be effective, especially for treating vascular diseases. However, recently, there have been reports saying that fatty acids also help treat type 2 diabetes, auto-inflammatory diseases, and even cancer. In his lecture, Dr. Lindley shared his latest findings on omega-3 derived fatty acids, found rich in fish, and its benefits on health. He explained in detail about the mechanism of taking docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a type of omega-3 fatty acids. Because these omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects on our bodies, they help improve asthma symptoms and surprisingly, athletic performance.


Students, faculty, and researchers who attended the lecture were impressed by Dr. Lindley’s research, motivating the students to actively participate in international academic exchanges and conduct studies abroad.
