Event Report on “AY2022 Results Report Meeting for TGU course on Mathematical and Physical Sciences “

In April 2017, the Multiscale Analysis, Modelling and Simulation Unit of Top Global University Project (TGU)
launched the TGU course on Mathematical and Physical Sciences for doctoral students of the School of Science and Engineering at Waseda University. In this course, a unique curriculum has been developed with the cooperation of the outstanding researchers and has been offered as part of graduate school education. In addition, we have sent students to overseas research institutions and supported their research presentations at workshops held in Japan and overseas, thereby promoting the development of internationally competitive top-ranking young researchers. This March, seven students completed the TGU course of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and five new students joined the program in April 2023, bringing the total number of students currently enrolled to 14 (Student Members).
Although the course report meeting and completion ceremony were held online due to Covid-19 for the past three years, we could hold the report meeting on March 24, 2023 in person.

AY2022 Results Report Meeting

This year, as a new trial, we held a poster session in the Information Gallery on the first floor of Building 63 at Nishiwaseda Campus. In the morning and afternoon sessions, course students gave a brief overview of their research in about 5 minutes each, followed by a 45-minute poster session where they gave more detailed explanations and answered questions. Many course students commented that it was a good opportunity for them to communicate closely with other students from different laboratories and fields of specialization, which is not an opportunity they usually have.
In addition, the number of students traveling abroad, which had been decreasing due to Covid-19, gradually recovered in the academic year 2022. In this meeting, Taiki Takeuchi (Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics), who studied at Paderborn University and Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), Tatsuki Yamamoto (Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics), who studied at the University of Pittsburgh (United States of America) and Takahiro Suzuki (Department of Pure and Applied Physics), who studied at the Palermo University (Italy) reported on their study abroad experiences.

Comment by Yoshiki Kaneko (Department of Pure and Applied Mathematics)

“Due to Covid-19, this report meeting, which had been held online for the past few years, was able to be held in person this year. I felt the difficulty of explaining to people whose fields are very different from my own and the importance of explaining in a way that they can understand. On the other hand, it was refreshing to hear stories from people in other fields that I do not usually hear. I was also able to hear valuable stories from people who have traveled abroad, which I would like to use as a reference in the future.”
