Connecting Technologies, Co-Creating the Future

FUJIMURA, Shigeru, Director of Information, Production and System Research Center

Since its establishment in 2007, Waseda University’s Information, Production and Systems Research Center (IPS Research Center) has pursued research and development to address challenges facing society and industry through collaboration with companies and other external organizations.

Industry is now undergoing a profound transformation. Rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, digital transformation (DX), green transformation (GX), semiconductors, and robotics are accompanied by increasingly complex challenges in areas such as decarbonization, energy, labor shortages, and supply chains. Addressing these challenges requires us to draw on more than a single technology or discipline. We must bring together diverse technologies and expertise—from materials and devices to sensing and measurement, control and robotics, information systems, and artificial intelligence—and translate them into practical applications that create new value for society.

To meet these challenges, the IPS Research Center promotes research and development founded on collaboration between university researchers and industry partners, bringing together knowledge, experience, and technologies from different fields to inspire new ideas. In 2017, we established the Waseda University IPS-Kitakyushu Consortium as a forum for this collaborative approach to innovation. The Consortium enables industry partners, university researchers, and students to engage in open exchange and dialogue across industries and disciplines. By sharing their knowledge, experience, and technologies, participants explore new research themes and opportunities for technological development. Moving beyond the traditional model of collaboration between a single researcher and a single company, we bring together multiple researchers, students, and companies to explore possibilities for new technologies and businesses.

As a hub for collaborative innovation that connects academia and industry, diverse technologies and expertise, and people with one another, the IPS Research Center will continue to integrate advanced technologies, including those driving AI, DX, and GX. Through these efforts, we will strive to create new technologies and value that underpin the future of industry and society. Together with our industry partners, we look forward to expanding the possibilities of technology and advancing research and development that opens the way to a new era.

Purpose of establishing the Research Center

Overseas collaboration

To further develop the open education and research conducted both domestically and internationally at the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems (IPS), which is affiliated with the center, and to deepen collaboration with universities and companies overseas, we will establish an international collaboration division and promote various projects.

Collaboration with companies

Three universities within the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park, together with automobile manufacturers and automotive parts suppliers, are working collaboratively to advance human resource development and research and development in the automotive field.
The Waseda University–Kitakyushu Consortium currently includes approximately 70 member companies and promotes regular exchange and interaction among its members.

Joint research and contributions to the community

We also carry out collaborative research with research institutions and companies both within and outside the university, as well as participation in large-scale national projects (Collaborative Research Division). In addition, we offer various seminars, training programs, and public lectures (Industry–Academia and Community Collaboration Division).

Support for the Information, Production and Systems Research Center

Since its establishment, the Information, Production and Systems Research Center, Waseda University (IPSRC) has aimed to contribute to industry and society as a whole through cutting-edge research and human resource development in the interdisciplinary fields of information, production, and systems.
We would be grateful for your generous support through a donation to our Center. Your contribution will help us further enhance our research environment and foster the next generation of researchers and engineers.
Your generous support will be used to strengthen collaboration with the local community, promote international collaborative research, and enhance student support programs.
We sincerely hope for your understanding of our mission and would greatly appreciate your kind support.
