Running from May 1 to November 8, 2026, the exhibition is being held across two venues on the Waseda Campus: the Exhibition Room of the Waseda International House of Literature and the Special Exhibition Room of the Waseda University History Museum. The first section,\u00a0located\u00a0in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/culture\/en\/about\/facilities\/rekishikan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Waseda University History Museum<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, introduces the historical background of the Vietnam War. Through historical materials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and explanatory panels, visitors learn about Vietnam\u2019s struggle for independence from French colonial rule, the division of the country into North and South Vietnam, the involvement of foreign powers, and the eventual fall of Saigon in 1975. The exhibition features a variety of materials related to the musical, including stage costumes, production posters, and video footage from performances. Visitors are invited to engage with the historical realities that underpin the musical\u2019s narrative.\u00a0Set during the final days of wartime\u00a0Saigon, the musical portrays the division between North and South Vietnam, American involvement in the conflict, and the experiences of children born amid the violence of war.\u00a0Through its portrayal of love, separation, war, and migration,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Miss Saigon<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">encourages visitors to reflect on how popular culture\u00a0represents\u00a0historical trauma and refugee experiences. Featured works range from novels such as Viet Thanh Nguyen&#8217;s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Sympathizer<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Monique Truong\u2019s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Book of Salt<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and Lan Cao\u2019s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Family in Six Tones<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fto works drawing on personal and family histories, including Kim Th\u00fay\u2019s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ru<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0Thi\u00a0Bui\u2019s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Best We Could Do<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and Ocean Vuong\u2019s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">On\u00a0Earth We\u2019re Briefly Gorgeous<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Together, this section offers visitors an introduction to a rich body of Vietnamese diasporic literature and inspires\u00a0them to explore authors and stories they may not have previously\u00a0encountered.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Personally, the third section\u00a0was the most memorable part of the exhibition. What I found particularly compelling was that the authors do not offer a single, unified narrative of what it means to be Vietnamese, American, or a refugee. Instead, they offer different answers to\u00a0common questions\u00a0about home, memory, identity, and the possibility of starting anew, using diverse literary styles and narrative perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Among the works on display, I was especially drawn to Ocean Vuong&#8217;s\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">On\u00a0Earth\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0Briefly Gorgeous<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0Written as a letter from a young Vietnamese American, Little Dog, to his illiterate mother, the novel employs a non-linear, almost poem-like narrative structure to weave together the experiences of multiple generations. Taken together,\u00a0works\u00a0such as this\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how literature can capture the complexity of lives shaped by war and migration while preserving experiences that might otherwise be forgotten.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As a visitor, I found the exhibition both intellectually stimulating and emotionally moving. What stood out to me was its ability to connect large historical events with personal stories through three sections across two venues. The exhibition reminds us that behind every historical event are individuals and families whose lives have been profoundly transformed.
