Waseda\u00a0University holds a collection of over\u00a05 million items, including books, artworks, calligraphy\u00a0and paintings, natural history\u00a0specimens<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>audiovisual materials, and\u00a0archival documents<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>among which are two National Treasures, seven Important Cultural Properties, and eight important works of art. The University makes these valuable cultural assets widely available to citizens, local communities, visitors and society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Tsubouchi\u00a0Memorial Theatre Museum, the Aizu Museum, the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0University History Museum, the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0International House of Literature\u00a0(Haruki\u00a0Murakami\u00a0Library) (all located on the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0Campus), the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0Sports Museum (Toyama Campus), and the Honjo\u00a0Waseda\u00a0no Mori Museum (Honjo Campus) will be holding special exhibitions that showcase the unique characteristics of each institution during the first half of\u00a0AY2026, so please come and visit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the Meiji era, when the term\u00a0<\/span>“<\/span>renai<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(\u604b\u611b\u3001<\/span><\/i>romance)<\/span>”\u00a0<\/span>first appeared in Japanese, romance had\u00a0remained\u00a0confined to the discourse of intellectuals, but by the early Showa period, it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>had permeated everyday life. During the same period, the film industry, which was rapidly developing, began to project the ever-changing nature of love onto the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

This exhibition explores the diverse forms of love depicted in Japanese romantic comedy films,\u00a0<\/span>showcasing<\/span>\u00a0how love has evolved alongside modern history. Through stories of newlyweds, modern girls’ romances, post-war free love, and unconventional\u00a0<\/span>heroines<\/span>, the exhibition highlights\u00a0<\/span>shifts<\/span>\u00a0in views on love, family, and gender, as well as the changing social customs surrounding romance. Additionally, it examines popular East Asian films and dramas of recent years, highlighting how romantic comedies are being embraced today within a transnational context.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Half a century after the end of the Vietnam War, conflicts continue around the world, and the refugee\u00a0crises\u00a0remains\u00a0a major challenge for the international community. This exhibition re-examines these contemporary issues from a historical perspective, focusing on the Vietnam War and the refugee culture and literature that\u00a0emerged\u00a0afterward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vietnam War, which began against the backdrop of the independence movement against colonial rule, ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975, following the division of the country into North and South and the intervention of foreign powers. After the war, many people left their homeland and scattered across the globe as \u201cboat people\u201d;\u00a0in the United States, they formed refugee communities, particularly in California, and gave rise to a new culture and literature.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This special exhibition takes the musical\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Miss Saigon<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(1989) as its starting point to explore the history of war and\u00a0Vietnamese-American\u00a0literature written by refugees, examining the impact of war on people\u2019s lives and cultural expression. The exhibition will be held at two venues: the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0International House of Literature\u00a0and the History Museum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The\u00a0Yungang\u00a0Grottoes are a magnificent Buddhist site built during the Northern Wei dynasty, which was re-evaluated after the Meiji Restoration and visited by many Japanese intellectuals. This exhibition introduces the perspective and footsteps of\u00a0Seiyo\u00a0Ogawa, a Buddhist\u00a0statue\u00a0photographer who\u00a0took photographs<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0made\u00a0rubbings, and\u00a0created sketches of the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Yungang\u00a0Grottoes\u00a0in 1939 and 1941.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This term,\u00a0<\/span>the museum is<\/span>\u00a0highlighting six clubs: the Kendo Club, Table Tennis Club, Yacht Club,\u00a0<\/span>Junko<\/span>\u00a0Baseball Club<\/span>, Wandervogel Club, and Aikido Club. Translation has always had\u00a0an important role\u00a0in Haruki Murakami\u2019s work.\u00a0In 2024, the\u00a0Waseda<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>International House of Literature\u00a0launched the Translation Project, including the \u201ctranslators-in-residence\u201d program, which invites translators from overseas to conduct research and give lectures during a one-month stay. This exhibition introduces the initiatives carried out through 2025 and displays materials related to the translation process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The \u201cSpirit of Innovation\u201d area was renovated on March 16, 2026. Along with an expanded\u00a0University history timeline, it now traces the history of\u00a0Waseda\u00a0University through the evolution of its campus. When the\u00a0University was founded, the\u00a0Waseda\u00a0area was surrounded by farmland, but over time, it has undergone a dramatic transformation into an urban landscape. The exhibition illustrates this history through the changes in the\u00a0University\u2019s buildings, spaces, and surrounding environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
