On November 25, 2025, Waseda University, in collaboration with the Universit\u00e9 libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium, held the 7th Waseda Brussels Conference, entitled “Next-Generation Quantum Technology through the Fusion of Nanophotonics and Atomic Physics”, at the BrIAS Seminar Hall in Brussels. Since established Waseda University Brussels Office (WBO)<\/a> in April 2026, Waseda University has held the Waseda Brussels Conference annually, except for during the COVID-19 pandemic, making this the 7th<\/sup> iteration.<\/p>\n

The 7th Conference was organized by Professor Aoki Takao<\/a> from Waseda\u2019s Faculty of Science and Engineering. The opening ceremony featured addresses by Masahiko Genma, Vice-President for International Affairs & International Fundraising, Waseda University, and Anne Weyembergh, Vice-Rector for External Relations & Cooperation, ULB. This was followed by a guest address from His Excellency Kazutoshi Aikawa, Ambassador of the Mission of Japan to the European Union<\/a>, and a video message from His Excellency Jean-Eric Paquet of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In recent years, advances in quantum technology have led to rapid progress in the development of physical platforms that underpin quantum computing and quantum networks. Among these platforms, nanoscale optical devices achieve strong light confinement, enabling robust interactions between light and matter. Meanwhile, cooled atoms possess superior quantum coherence properties and high controllability, making them ideal for quantum information processing. Therefore, merging the fields of nanophotonics and atomic physics is expected to accelerate research and development into innovative, next-generation quantum technologies, leading to the development of large-scale, distributed quantum computing and global quantum networks.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s conference featured presentations from researchers from Japan and Europe on their cutting-edge research in this new interdisciplinary field, fostered discussions about technical challenges and future prospects, and promoted further developing international collaborative research between the two regions. Furthermore, events such as a poster session encouraged participation from many young researchers, deepening research exchange and broadening the potential for new international collaborations.<\/p>\n
