Hosted by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/icc\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Intercultural Communication Center (ICC)<\/a>, this one-of-a-kind performance was part of a tour supported by The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and its Center for Latino Arts, with the goal of promoting and celebrating cultural exchange and musical tradition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80905\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-80905 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-610x407.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-2000x1333.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2024\/05\/DSCF3462-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dancers with Los Camperos<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mariachi de Uclatl\u00e1n, comprised of students from The UCLA&#8217;s Herb Alpert School of Music, opened the show with two-time Grammy Award winning Mariachi Los Camperos from Los Angeles commanding the stage thereafter. Renowned musical director Jes\u00fas \u201cChuy\u201d Guzm\u00e1n advises Mariachi de Uclatl\u00e1n, while simultaneously directing and performing with Los Camperos. Los Camperos are widely believed to be the finest mariachi ensemble in the world, their numerous accolades and rich history of promoting Mexican culture worldwide are a testament to that.<\/p>\n<p>The evening began with a warm welcome by <a href=\"https:\/\/w-rdb.waseda.jp\/html\/100000143_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Professor Yusuke Goto<\/a>, a Spanish professor at Waseda University. As an expert in ethnomusicology at The UCLA Herb Alpert School ofMusic and Director of the UCLA Center for Latino Arts, Professor Loza emphasized the power of music to bring people together, transcending race and cultural barriers. &#8220;Mariachi is the symbol of Mexico,&#8221; he remarked, \u201cbut also a symbol for the world. And we want to bring Mariachi and Mexico to everyone\u201d. The performance began with Mariachi de Uclatl\u00e1n, who were dressed in a traditional mariachi uniform in their school colours. The student ensemble delivered a stunning set of six songs accompanied by two skilled dancers. The energy was electric, with the audience erupting into applause frequently, inspired by the lively rhythms and melodies the talented and diverse Uclatl\u00e1n had to offer.<\/p>\n<p>Mariachi Los Camperos followed and performed an impressive set of eight songs. Their repertoire included tracks from the beloved children\u2019s movie &#8220;Coco,&#8221; much to the delight of the audience. The musicians frequently interacted with the crowd, and the violinists even walked amongst the audience while performing a song. Together they performed the Japanese folk song \u2018<em>Sakura<\/em>\u2019.
