About the Use of Generative Artificial <\/span><\/span>Intelligence (ChatGPT, etc.)<\/span><\/span>

I<\/span><\/span>ntellect<\/span><\/span>ual resilience <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>flexib<\/span><\/span>le <\/span><\/span>sensitivity<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Waseda University has been asking students to train themselves to develop \u201cintellectual<\/span><\/span>
resilience\u201d so that they can think thoroughly about problems with no correct answer and <\/span><\/span>come<\/span><\/span>
up with their own answers, and to foster \u201cflexible sensitivity\u201d that allows them to work together<\/span><\/span>
with a variety of people of different races, nationalities, religions, ethnic groups, languages,<\/span><\/span>
genders, and sexual orientations in order to solve vari<\/span><\/span>ous problems with respect and sympathy<\/span><\/span>
for one another. In <\/span><\/span>today\u2019s <\/span><\/span>world, where we face major issues such as pandemics, wars, and<\/span><\/span>
progressing technological innovation, which can be said to be turning points in society, the<\/span><\/span>
importance of “intellectual resilience” and “flexible sensitivity” is increasing.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

For example, th<\/span><\/span>e development of new technology will change the way we live, work, and the<\/span><\/span>
state<\/span> of<\/span> society. <\/span><\/span>It’s<\/span> an<\/span> unavoidable<\/span> reality<\/span> that<\/span> scientific<\/span> progress<\/span> and<\/span> technological<\/span><\/span>
innovation will always have positive and negative sides, advantages and disadvantages. <\/span><\/span>It<\/span><\/span>
de<\/span><\/span>pends on how humans use technology, and on national policies and institutions that<\/span><\/span>
promote or regulate these technological innovations. <\/span><\/span>For those of you who aim to strengthen<\/span><\/span>
your “intellectual resilience”, nurture your “flexible sensitivity”, and contribut<\/span><\/span>e to society,<\/span><\/span>
realizing the correct use of new technology is an extremely important issue. <\/span><\/span>It will also be an<\/span><\/span>
important task to conduct research on measures to mitigate the social impact and disseminate<\/span><\/span>
the results, with a \u201cflexible sensitivity\u201d that sympa<\/span><\/span>thizes with those who are negatively affected<\/span><\/span>
by new technology.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n


Fundamental Attitudes towards Generative AI<\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/h3>\n
<\/div>\n
Generative artificial intelligence (hereinafter referred to as generative AI) such as ChatGPT<\/span><\/span>
(OpenAI), Bard (Google), and Bing (Microsoft), wh<\/span><\/span>ich have become a hot topic in recent<\/span><\/span>
years, are advancing their performance at an accelerated pace. <\/span><\/span>It has been pointed out that<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
they have the potential to bring about major changes in<\/span><\/span><\/span> our society. For this reason, interactive<\/span><\/span>
automated response services<\/span><\/span> based on generative AI are not only tested around the world but<\/span><\/span><\/span>
also discussed at educational institutions as to how they should be utilized and regulated.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Those who advocate “intellectual resilience” need to be familiar with the correct usage of<\/span><\/span>
generat<\/span><\/span>ive AI.<\/span><\/span><\/span> To that end, we must have sufficient knowledge of generative AI and cultivate<\/span><\/span>
an attitude of keeping pace with technological progress and continuing to innovate our<\/span><\/span>
knowledge.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Because then you can masterfully use the technology instead of being the<\/span><\/span><\/span> one<\/span><\/span>
used by it.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
In addition, it is imperative to have an accurate understanding of the impact that generative<\/span><\/span>
AI will have on society and people, and the issues that arise around the formation process,<\/span><\/span>
when we consider the issues of whether to stop the<\/span><\/span> development or regulate the use of<\/span><\/span>
generative AI, all of which are in the midst of debate.<\/span><\/span><\/span> This is because in the development of<\/span><\/span>
new technologies and the production of products and services based on them, a great impact<\/span><\/span>
on various people is observed not on<\/span><\/span>ly after development and production but also before.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>
Characteristics of Generative AI<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/h3>\n
<\/div>\n
Generative AI learns by itself based on the vast amount of data on the Internet, and can<\/span><\/span>
instantly generate response sentences in a natural language dialogue format f<\/span><\/span>or various<\/span><\/span>
questions and requests in a wide range of fields.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Also, even if you ask the same question, the<\/span><\/span>
answer (sentence) that is returned will change each time. The following tasks that were<\/span><\/span>
previously performed by humans can now be handled by generative AI.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
(1) Generation of new sentences based on given string<\/span><\/span>s and keywords (creation of reports,<\/span><\/span>
impressions, etc.)<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(2) Generating answers for tests (fill<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>blank questions, multiple<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>choice questions,<\/span><\/span>
open<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>ended questions, etc.)<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(3) Brainstorming, creation of ideas<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(4)<\/span><\/span> Summarization, translation and proofre<\/span><\/span>ading of existing texts and web pages<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(5)<\/span><\/span> Data analysis<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(6)<\/span><\/span> Easy programming<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(7)<\/span><\/span> Lyrics, composition<\/span><\/span><\/span>
(8) Searching for documents and information<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If you can use generative AI with these functions well, you will be able to save a lot of your<\/span><\/span>
work time,<\/span><\/span><\/span> and many people will get the benefit of being able to concentrate on other<\/span><\/span>
important tasks.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
On the other hand, the following flaws and difficulties have also been pointed out.<\/span><\/span><\/span> There<\/span><\/span><\/span> are<\/span><\/span>
many things that students need to be careful about.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
First, genera<\/span><\/span>tive AI does not always output accurate information.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Currently, f<\/span><\/span>or example,<\/span><\/span>
there are quite a few cases where answers are generated using non<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>existent universities<\/span><\/span><\/span> or<\/span><\/span>
companies, incorrect<\/span><\/span> numerical data<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> or<\/span><\/span><\/span> wrong<\/span><\/span><\/span> names.<\/span><\/span><\/span> It has also been observed<\/span><\/span><\/span> often<\/span><\/span><\/span> to<\/span><\/span>
fabricat<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span><\/span> bibliographies of titles and author names that do not exist.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
Second, it has been pointed out that reports generated by generative AI are (currently)<\/span><\/span>
logically correct as text, but the content is shallow and there is a tendency for a repetition<\/span><\/span> of<\/span><\/span>
plausible and obvious things.<\/span><\/span><\/span> If you use the results of the generative AI without examining the<\/span><\/span>
content,<\/span><\/span> the report will be lacking in originality.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
Third, if you submit the thesis created by the generative AI without carefully examining it,<\/span><\/span>
the thesi<\/span><\/span>s will be evaluated as it is, even if there are incompleteness or fatal errors in the<\/span><\/span>
content. You may also be subject to disciplinary action if plagiarism, inappropriate citation,<\/span><\/span>
or fabrication is confirmed in the submitted thesis, even if you did not in<\/span><\/span>tend to do so.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Of<\/span><\/span>
course, if you submit a thesis created by the generative AI as it is, it will be punished as a<\/span><\/span>
fraudulent act similar to cheating.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
Fourth, careless use of generative AI may lead to the leakage of confidential information<\/span><\/span>
within the univ<\/span><\/span>ersity or company, and questions that include your name, etc. may lead to the<\/span><\/span>
leakage of personal information.<\/span><\/span><\/span> It has also been pointed out that the disorderly use of<\/span><\/span>
generative AI can lead to discrimination, human rights violations, and criminal behavior.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Freedom of action must be guaranteed for technological progress, but no one has the freedom<\/span><\/span>
to infringe on human rights.<\/span><\/span><\/span> “Intellectual resilience” must also pay attention to the tension<\/span><\/span>
between technology and society.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>
Usage and Limitations<\/span><\/span> of Generative<\/span><\/span><\/span> AI<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

Surely you might be able to complete a report quickly with generative AI, but you’re giving up<\/span><\/span>
the opportunity to improve your abilities. Reports are created by gathering a large amount of<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
information from documents and materials, classifying, analyzi<\/span><\/span>ng, and summarizing them to<\/span><\/span>
create the most appropriate answer to the task.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Writing a report is the most important exercise<\/span><\/span>
in developing<\/span> \u201cintellectual resilience\u201d. As a result of neglecting this task and prioritizing<\/span><\/span>
short<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>term profits, in serious situations such as entrance exams and work in the real world,<\/span><\/span>
you will notice the<\/span><\/span> fact that you have learned nothing.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
On the other hand, for those working as business creators who envision unprecedented<\/span><\/span>
products and services, the use of generative AI will lead to the realization of effective work.<\/span><\/span><\/span> In<\/span><\/span>
the process of collecting, classif<\/span><\/span>ying, summarizing, and analyzing vast amounts of information<\/span><\/span>
about similar past cases to generate new ideas, the partial use of generative AI could save time,<\/span><\/span><\/span>
and y<\/span><\/span>ou could spend more of your time generating important new ideas.<\/span><\/span><\/span> This effective use<\/span><\/span>
assumes<\/span><\/span> that you know firsthand how much work is needed and what quality is required at<\/span><\/span>
each stage in the process of making a report. That way, you can easily determine the merits<\/span><\/span>
of substituting that part with generative AI, as well as discrepancies and mistakes<\/span><\/span> in the<\/span><\/span>
responses shown by AI, and you can use it in a suitable manner. It is important to train your<\/span><\/span>
“intellectual resilience” daily so that you can use generative AI appropriately according to the<\/span><\/span>
time and situation.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
In addition, there are reservations<\/span><\/span> about generative AI in terms of “flexible sensitivity”. To be<\/span><\/span>
able to work together to solve social problems while respecting the diverse attributes and<\/span><\/span>
backgrounds of various people, it is necessary to build mutual trust.<\/span><\/span><\/span> It requires both mutual<\/span><\/span>
understan<\/span><\/span>ding and sympathy.<\/span><\/span><\/span> A certain<\/span><\/span> kind<\/span><\/span><\/span> of expression is also required in exchange of<\/span><\/span>
messages, but it seems difficult for generative AI to appropriately provide expressions that<\/span><\/span>
show fine<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>grained correspondence and persuasive power.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Future Action<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n
<\/span><\/span>
You will c<\/span><\/span>ontinue to utilize a variety of products and services developed based on new<\/span><\/span>
technologies.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Before using them, or while using them, you should repeatedly think about<\/span><\/span>
whether they are necessary for you, whether they are beneficial to you, and what kind of<\/span><\/span>
im<\/span><\/span>pact they have on society.<\/span><\/span><\/span> What is beneficial to you now may only have a negative effect on<\/span><\/span>
your future self.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Some people get more benefits than disadvantages, others do not. Think<\/span><\/span>
objectively and with an altruistic spirit.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Waseda University’s students, fa<\/span><\/span>culty, and staff, as<\/span><\/span>
well as all concerned parties, should not forget this way of thinking.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span>
“Intellectual resilience” applies to all matters in the world.<\/span><\/span><\/span> To fully understand the multi<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

faceted impact of new technologies, how to curb the negative aspects,<\/span><\/span><\/span> and to further expand<\/span><\/span>
the positive aspects, we (not only individuals, but also governments, industries, communities,<\/span><\/span>
etc.) must think carefully about what we should do.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
