This workshop on mathematical fluid mechanics research has been held every year since 2009. It invites Japanese and international researchers who have presented notable research results that year and provides opportunities for young researchers to present their findings. For instance, the workshop last year focused on modelling blood flow and its numerical analysis, and researchers from the medical, fluid mechanics, and mathematical fluid mechanics discussed the topic. Doctoral students from the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Course<\/a> also gave presentations on their research results.<\/p>\n This year, a session called \u201cOxford-Waseda in Mathematics\u201d was held to commemorate the university-wide agreement between Oxford University and Waseda University signed in April 2020<\/a>. The objective of this session was to discuss how the two universities could expand their educational and research exchange on a larger scale. Waseda\u2019s Professor Hironori Kasahara (Senior Executive Vice President for Research and IT Promotion) and Professor Yoshihiro Shibata (Head of the Mathematics Department and Head of the Multiscale Analysis, Modelling and Simulation Model Unit) as well as Oxford\u2019s Professor Chas Bountra (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation) and Professor Mike Giles (Head of the Mathematics Department) gave opening speeches during the session.<\/p>\n From left: Chas Bountra (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Innovation and Professor of Translational Medicine, University of Oxford); Mike Giles (Head of Mathematics and Professor of Scientific Computing, University of Oxford); Hironori Kasahara (Senior Executive Vice President for Research; Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Waseda University); and Yoshihiro Shibata (Director and Professor, Department of Mathematics, Waseda University)<\/p><\/div>\n In their opening speeches, both Vice President Kasahara and Pro-Vice Chancellor Bountra emphasized the importance of collaboration. Vice President Kasahara introduced Waseda\u2019s efforts in industry-academia collaboration, such as the launch of the Research Innovation Center<\/a>. This new center integrates the following four functions: research strategy planning; collaboration between industry, government, and academia, management of intellectual property; and entrepreneurship. The center’s aim is to enhance the University\u2019s collaborations with industry to advance the development of new technologies and products, as well as help create venture businesses for students, staff, and faculty.<\/p>\n Pro-Vice Chancellor Bountra commented in his speech that, \u201c[The global challenges we face today] cannot be sorted by any one individual or any one institution. The answer lies in collaboration and partnership. We have to work across disciplines, we have to work with other institutions, we have to work with industry, and we have to work with government, with funders, and with regulators.
