Diploma Policy<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Acquired Aptitudes and Abilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Waseda University cultivates capable individuals who internalize three missions: the independence of scholarship, the promotion of the practical application of scholarship, and the fostering of good citizens.<\/p>\n

Our aim is to foster intellectual resilience and flexible\u00a0sensitivity; the ability to make meaningful use of expertise;\u00a0and the commitment to treat others with dignity regardless\u00a0of nationality, ethnicity, language, faith, or diverse values\u00a0and ways of life. With these qualities, Waseda graduates will be able to build a better world that is more tolerant and inclusive.<\/p>\n

Degree Conferral Policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Students will acquire the following six abilities and\u00a0foundational perspectives through their studies at Waseda.<\/p>\n

1. Creativity and constructive thinking:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

an enterprising spirit and ability to construct new concepts that break with tradition.<\/p>\n

2. The ability to identify problems and their solutions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

the capacity to articulate or simulate new problems and to\u00a0propose as well as logically explain solutions to these\u00a0problems.<\/p>\n

3. Effective communication skills:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

the ability to create mutual understanding with others in\u00a0order to make the most of one\u2019s proficiencies and training.<\/p>\n

4. Spirit of inquiry:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

a willingness to examine social and natural phenomena in a\u00a0multifaceted way; to think critically about the framing of\u00a0and solutions to existing problems; and make constructive\u00a0proposals in response to these problems.<\/p>\n

5. A spirit of autonomy and tolerance:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

a fair and receptive attitude toward diversity as well as an\u00a0ethos of independence and acceptance of the individuality\u00a0of both oneself and others.<\/p>\n

6. International character:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

putting intellectual resilience and flexible sensitivity in\u00a0service of working with others to solve global challenges.<\/p>\n

Curriculum Policy<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Constructing a systematic curriculum that fulfills\u00a0graduation requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Waseda University\u2019s curriculum is designed to help\u00a0students acquire expertise in their chosen academic\u00a0discipline while also developing the broad abilities and\u00a0foundational perspectives outlined in the Diploma Policy,\u00a0above. The University continually enhances academic-skills-building courses and approaches to help students\u00a0master evidence-based thinking. Waseda offers a variety of\u00a0subjects by academic field, level, and class style, to facilitate students\u2019 own independent learning.<\/p>\n

Waseda University has adopted a style of education focused\u00a0on student engagement, anchored principally in seminar-style and active learning-style classes, as well as project-oriented fieldwork and experiments, to promote self-directed learning. Waseda also offers regular extracurricular\u00a0programs to raise students\u2019 human competencies including\u00a0wisdom, ambition, and action. By creating an environment\u00a0in which students interact with one another and with society\u00a0at large, Waseda encourages a variety of ways to achieve\u00a0personal growth.<\/p>\n

The subjects and programs offered to students fall into the\u00a0following three broad categories.<\/p>\n

  • The curriculum aims to raise students\u2019 level of expertise in\u00a0their own fields of specialization and expertise in both\u00a0academic and practical ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    2. Academic Skills and Liberal Arts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Waseda offers opportunities to build academic skills and to acquire a broad liberal arts education. Academic skills and tools are necessary to receive higher education at a university as well as to pursue intellectual careers in the information economy, while a liberal arts education fosters students\u2019 capacity for insight and discernment by exposing them to ways of thinking from outside their major field of study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      3. Experience-based\/Practical Subjects and Programs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      • Waseda offers all students practical opportunities to learn while also contributing to their communities. These include studying abroad, volunteering, internships, and leadership education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Before Coming to Waseda<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            Waseda students must seek an in-depth understanding of\u00a0the liberal arts, not only during years at Waseda but also\u00a0throughout life. We seek students who are eager to study a\u00a0wide range of\u00a0 subjects across academic disciplines, and who desire to accumulate a breadth and depth of academic experiences. We expect that before enrolling at Waseda, prospective students will develop a foundation for the\u00a0abilities and perspectives that will allow them to contribute to society and communities around the world.<\/p>\n

            Acceptance Policy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            Waseda University welcomes students from across Japan and around the world. When accepting new students, we determine if applicants have intellectual curiosity as well as a necessary basis of knowledge and skills at the time of admission. We seek students with the capacity for logical reasoning, who possess good judgment, who can express themselves, who can work well with others, and who are\u00a0self-motivated to succeed in a rigorous program of study at Waseda.<\/p>\n

            Types of Evaluation Methods<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            Waseda University\u2019s admissions process combines an\u00a0assessment of a student\u2019s ability to succeed in her or his\u00a0chosen program of study, as well as in broader fields of\u00a0knowledge. With this in mind, Waseda University has a\u00a0number of different entrance exams in order to assemble a\u00a0diverse set of students. One entrance exam is offered to\u00a0those applicants who have exceptional aptitude in several of\u00a0the following categories: knowledge\/abilities, logical\u00a0reasoning\/judgment\/verbal expression, self-motivation\/ability to work well with others. Another exam is\u00a0offered to applicants who meet a certain level in these\u00a0categories and also possess outstanding aptitude and\u00a0originality in literature, art, sports, or other areas.<\/p>\n
