{"id":34335,"date":"2015-11-05T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T05:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/?p=34335"},"modified":"2015-12-11T16:33:30","modified_gmt":"2015-12-11T07:33:30","slug":"waseda-invites-american-researchers-to-discuss-energy-and-foreign-policy-as-part-of-kakehashi-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/news\/34335","title":{"rendered":"US researchers visit Waseda to discuss energy and foreign policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On October 15, Waseda University invited a group of young American researchers from\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">the<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/crsinfo\">Congressional Research Service<\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/thenationaleconomistsclub.shuttlepod.org\/\">National Economists Club<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0and the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage.org\/\">Heritage Foundation<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, for<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0a series of lectures and discussions on national security, economics and energy policy. The event was sponsored by the Kakehashi Project, a large-scale exchange program between Japan and the United States funded by Japan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and supported by the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.us-jpri.org\/en\/index.html\">U.S.-Japan Research Institute (USJI)<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">. The progra<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">m aims to promote understanding of Japanese foreign policy, government, and history, and to communicate the strengths and charms of Japan through the participants back to their home countries. In May this year, Waseda hosted a group of 50 students from New York&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Columbia<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">University as part of the same project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34349 aligncenter\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1-610x457.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Following a tour of campus, the group of young researchers attended a lecture and discussion with Professor Masahiko Gemma (Faculty of Social Sciences) on energy and environmental policy. Professor Gemma presented an overview of Japan\u2019s geography, and government and regulatory systems, moving on to discuss his study of water conservation and recent trends in energy conservation and alternative energy resources. Discussion with the American researchers spanned a wide range of topics, including factors driving improvements in vehicle fuel economy, exported energy-conserving products, potential winners and losers of the recent TPP agreement, long-term energy planning, and more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34350 aligncenter\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2-610x457.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/en\/assets\/uploads\/2015\/11\/2-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second lecture was from Associate Professor Shuhei Kurizaki (Faculty of Political Science and Economics) who presented an overview and history of Japan\u2019s national security policies, and traced the government\u2019s transition from the \u201cYoshida Doctrine\u201d of early postwar Japan to the \u201cAbe Doctrine\u201d of today. Yamaji dove deeper into the topics of foreign policy and national security, and explained a series of government policies for adapting to the present geopolitical climate.
