Harnessing its unique features as a university, Waseda University\u00a0works hard to fuse several disciplines\u2014including the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences\u2014to generate high-level research that will contribute to the world at large. As part of the “Waseda Goes Global”\u00a0initiative (also known as the “Ocean Initiative”) which is supported as a top level initiative by the Top\u00a0Global University Project, we will invest in six areas with already established international reputations\u2014Japan Culture Studies, Physics and Mathematics, NanoEnergy Materials, ICT & Robotics, Health and Sport Sciences and Positive Political Economy\u2014and boost our reputation even further.\u3000With competition between universities becoming fiercer both inside and outside Japan, our goal at Waseda University is to create a \u201cWaseda\u201d that will be a world leader in education and research. Across our university, we must join hands and move forward in order to realize our goal of being \u201cThe Best\u201d globally in a wide range of fields\u2014\u201dThe Best Education,\u201d \u201cThe Best Research\u201d and, finally, \u201cThe Best Community.\u201d A desire for challenge and progress has been cultivated throughout Waseda\u2019s history and I believe that now is the moment to let this spirit come into full bloom and lead us to substantial achievements.<\/p>\n

Physical and mental well-being issues such as inactivity among children and the increasing number of elderly people who require nursing care are becoming increasingly evident in modern society. Japan is at the global forefront in terms of the severity of such issues. It is common knowledge that exercise and sports are important for addressing such issues; however, simply saying \u201cWe should exercise\u201d to people will not solve the problem. It is essential not only to incorporate elements of fun and enjoyment into exercise, but also to incorporate exercise into everyday habits and routines. Accomplishing this requires an integration of Sport Sciences that utilizes academic expertise in sports and the fusion of sports research areas previously regarded as separate academic disciplines.<\/p>\n Waseda University has been a driving force behind the rise of sport sciences ever since it created the School of Sport Sciences, the first university-created school in Japan\u00a0with \u201cSports\u201d in its name. Waseda University\u2019s Faculty of Sport Sciences (School of Sport Sciences, Graduate School of Sport Sciences and the Waseda Institute for Sport Sciences) boasts international education researchers in a wide range of fields, from exercise physiology and biometrics to sports management. We have also turned out a number of top athletes and make great efforts to provide them with all\u00a0necessary support. Examples\u00a0of this support include\u00a0the physical coach of Japan women\u2019s national soccer team and the team doctors for the\u00a0Beijing and London olympics. As part of these fundamental values, in 2009 we established \u201cSport Sciences for the Promotion of Active Life,\u201d a Global COE (Center of Excellence) under a\u00a0Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) funding program.<\/p>\n<\/del>_________________________________<\/p>\nFusing areas of sport research previously regarded as separate academic disciplines.<\/h3>\n
