The latest figures announced on April 22 by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) place Waseda University on top in Japan again for number of students studying abroad based on exchange agreements.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waseda University sent 1,612 Japanese students abroad in 2012, topping the list for the second consecutive year. Also, the University received 3,899 students from abroad, topping that list for the fifth consecutive year since JASSO began publishing figures in 2009. While the national headlines lament a continuing decline in the number of students studying overseas, Waseda University is on the rise. This can be attributed to Waseda\u2019s student exchange system meeting various student needs such as short-, medium- and long-term stays and double degree programs. Including students outside exchange programs, Waseda counts 4,697 international students (2013 data), also tops in Japan. With other efforts such as increasing the number of international faculty and establishing the International Student House, Waseda University has become one of the most diverse universities in Japan.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, Waseda University has been proactively pursuing internationalization and developing infrastructure such as systems and facilities. Now it has agreements with over 700 foreign institutions (in 2013) which accept Waseda students and staff, and courses of study in six undergraduate and eleven graduate schools where students can obtain degrees using only English. Waseda has taken measures to attract talented and diverse human resources from around the world, to nurture students who can succeed on the world stage, and to accomplish the mission of a modern university.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the\u00a0Waseda Vision 150<\/a>\u00a0strategic plan was announced last year with development goals for the University\u2019s 150th anniversary in 2032. The plan sets high numerical targets such as increasing the number of foreign students to 10,000, more than double the current number, and having all students study overseas at least once. Waseda University is committed to internationalization as a global leading university.<\/p>\n

On May 9-10, the University hosted the\u00a0Spring Study Abroad Fair.<\/a>\u00a0Helpful programs extended over two days, including an informational meeting for exchange programs, presentations by staff from affiliated schools overseas, talks by former exchange students about their experiences, and individual consultations for students thinking about studying abroad.<\/p>\n
