On behalf of Waseda University, I would like to express my deepest condolences to those who have lost their precious lives in the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake on March 11 and the consequent massive tsunami. I also extend my heartfelt sympathy to all who have been affected by this unprecedented disaster and the earthquakes that followed. It is my sincere hope that safety will be restored and the affected areas will recover as soon as possible.

Waseda University, as informed through its website and other media, has introduced flexible measures for the applicants who have passed our entrance examinations and suffered from the earthquake. The measures include extension of admission procedure deadlines and financial support primarily through tuition reduction/exemption and scholarship programs. For current students, if their family members supporting them financially have been affected by this disaster, they can resort to our support program including tuition reduction/exemption and scholarships. We are taking all possible efforts to support the promising youth so that they can keep their hopes and dreams in spite of the difficult times. If any of our students needs our support program, I strongly encourage him/her to consult with us as soon as possible. The contact details are available on the website of the University.

After receiving the information that some of our graduating students and their families have suffered from the disaster, and also in view of the current circumstances such as the aftershocks, the current public transportation, and the social demand for power conservation, Waseda University has decided to cancel the commencement for AY2010 scheduled on March 25 and 26. It was a difficult and painful decision for all of us, as we look back how hard these students have studied and how proud they are to graduate with their degrees. Nevertheless, we hope that they share our sympathy for people in the devastated areas, and will fly high into the next stage of their lives.

The entrance ceremonies for AY2011 are currently under consideration, but we earnestly hope that the new students will be proud of becoming Waseda students and focus on their study and research.

Things at large, including the aftershocks and the secondary disaster, continue to require due attention in the affected areas and the neighboring prefectures. I would like to extend my sincere wishes for our students and alumni, their families, our faculty and administrative staff, and everyone in this nation, to fully take care of their health and safety, and to stand together to overcome these trying times. Waseda University is fully determined and committed to offer as much support as possible.
